Pope
Pious IX F.A.O.
: F, 462
The
unification of Italy reduced the Pontifical States to the Vatican
City. The Church’s political power was annulled and its economic strength
drastically curtailed. Nevertheless, the ideological force of Pope
Pious IX (who considered himself a prisoner) and subsequent popes
continued to direct Catholics everywhere, and to exert considerable
influence over the political policies of a great many countries.
