Jose Mª Iparragirre
Jose Mª Iparragirre F.A.O. : F, 633
A typical 19th century man, Iparragirre’s life was full of contradictions. When he was 14 years old, he travelled 400 kilometres to fight in the cause of an absolutist king and in 1848, was expelled from France for singing “La Marelleise”. Later, the Spanish government exiled him as a result of his pro-Basque song “The Tree of Gernika”. He emigrated to Argentina, but soon grew homesick and left his family to return to the Basque Country. Although he was famous, he chose a bohemian way of life and died in poverty.
