Daguerre presented 1839 photography to the public. This French artist and physicist was aware that his discovery would bring about a revolution, but he could not possibly have foreseen just how far things would go. The invention evolved in leaps and bounds and forever changed the face and concept of newspapers, which became tools in the service of much more self-conscious people, and therefore much more effective instruments of power.
Discovery of chloroform, a chemical product 1831 that proved extremely useful as an anaesthetic in all kinds of surgical operations, thereby drastically decreasing the mortality rate during such interventions.
Beginning of the First Carlist War. Following the death of Fernando VII, his brother, Carlos, 1833 refused to accept the Pragmática Sanción, the recently enacted law that enabled women to ascend the throne, and led an uprising against Isabel, his three-year-old niece. However, the issue at stake during the subsequent armed conflicts went far beyond the choice between a king or a queen. Each side stood for the specific political, economic, social and ideological system that it considered vital to its own survival. Two years later, in 1835, the Carlists were defeated by Tomas Zumalacárregui during the first siege of Bilbao.
After many long years of conflict, the Bergara Convention finally put an end to the war.
Morse invented the telegraph, which enabled 1832 news to arrive anywhere in just a few hours, thereby making publication much more immediate. The telegraph proved a major boon for the written press.
The Boers, Dutch colonists in South Africa, fled the British administration and headed north to establish their own territory between British dominated land 1835 and Zulu country. Two years later, in 1837, they achieved their aims and established a zone they termed the Free Province of New Holland.
The Danish writer, 1835 Hans Christian Andersen, started publishing a series of tales which were to be his greatest work. Many of his tales, such as The Emperor’s New Clothes and The Ugly Duckling, are still favourites today all over the world.
